Preview: Lord Huron at The Anthem on Aug. 2

This Sunday, Aug. 2, is not just any ordinary Lord’s Day—it’s Lord Huron’s Day. The Los Angeles-based band composed of percussionist Mark Barry, bassist Miguel Briseño, guitarist Tom Renaud, and founder Ben Schenider will fill all 57,000-square-feet of The Anthem with cinematic sounds and poetic lyricism starting at 8 p.m.. Opener August Ponthier, who is a featured vocalist on Lord Huron’s 2021 song “I Lied,” will kick off the concert with their sapphic indie-folk tracks. Ponthier’s soothing, atmospheric voice will help set a reverent tone for the lucky concertgoers as they wait for Lord Huron to take the stage.

Lord Huron’s music teems with both simplicity and grandeur. While these descriptors may seem contradictory, it is precisely because the band’s craft is so refined—instrumentally and lyrically—that its tracks are resonant. This is unsurprising considering how long Barry, Briseño, Renaud, and Schenider have had to hone their talent. While Schneider began the project independently in 2010 and joined forces with the other three musicians a year later, the group first began making music together at the tender age of twelve. With three decades of chemistry, the band members blend beats with ease, producing an unparalleled sonic richness. One Reddit user even goes so far as to describe Lord Huron’s music as retro like a “Dodge Challenger.” The band’s consummated acoustic aesthetics, in tandem with its lore-laden lyrics, attract a fanbase of restless souls. When the energy of performers and concertgoers who crave emotional depth and spiritual connection collide in The Anthem on Sunday, it is sure to be electric—perhaps even divine.
