Lucinda Williams at the 9:30 Club on Sept. 30

Forget the Fruits of My Labor for one night and go see three-time grammy winner Lucinda Williams at the 9:30 Club! One of her many stops at the venue over the past two decades, Williams returns to Washington Sept. 30 to perform her most recent album, World’s Gone Wrong, released Jan. 23, 2026. 

The alt-country legend returns with a newly configured band: Marc Ford on guitar, Brady Blade on the drums, and her longtime bassist David Sutton. The show, officially billed An Evening with Lucinda Williams and her Band, will not have an opening act—just Williams, unfiltered. After decades of performing, Williams remains one of Americana’s most vital voices, bringing a raw and defiant energy to the stage. Expect the set to draw heavily from World’s Gone Wrong, including songs like “Freedom Speaks” and “Low Life,” which she co-wrote with members of the indie-folk band Big Thief. The performance will also include her cover of Bob Marley’s “So Much Trouble in the World” and other staples from her catalog and a closing run of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.”  

World’s Gone Wrong was written and recorded primarily with the collaboration of Williams’s husband/manager/co-producer Tom Overby and guitarist Doug Pettibone. Williams has said a completely different album was already in the works before urgency pushed her and her co-writers to scrap it and record this one instead—nine songs about working people just trying to get by. In “Freedom Speaks,” Williams reminds the audience that “apathy will blind you,” and we must “stand up and fight.” The album balances that urgency with moments of resilience, particularly on its hymn-like closing track, “We’ve Come Too Far to Turn Around,” featuring Norah Jones on piano and harmonies.
