Living a Genuine Life with Life 1
Quadeca’s path to stardom has been anything but traditional. Debuting as a YouTuber, he created gaming videos, beefed with KSI, and made goofy rap skits imitating other rappers. However, his career soon began to evolve. Releases such as I Didn’t Mean to Haunt You (2022) and Vanisher, Horizon Scraper (2025) were met with widespread critical acclaim as Quadeca left his teenage rapper persona behind to start creating lyrical folktronica concept albums. Life 1 (2026) is yet another left turn in his artistic trajectory. Quadeca is not a ghost or a sailor as he was on his previous two albums. For the first time in a long time, he is himself: Benjamin Lasky.
Life 1 excels by not taking itself too seriously, which the album’s stunning production illustrates perfectly. On the surface, beats played on Casio keyboards and accented with stock airhorns and cat sound effects may appear amateurish, but Lasky proves that he can construct masterful beats and endearing, nostalgic soundscapes from just about anything. Quadeca’s heavenly vocals on tracks like “Dark magic” and “It goes like this” complement swanky pianos with an R&B flair. He carries this warmth into the standout song “Make you my what,” a giddy expression of love. He sings each lyric with nervous excitement; the extent of his devotion would shine through even without words.
Looking beyond love, Lasky takes a glance at life through a philosophical lens. On “Baby steps,” he plays a criminal who robs the child version of himself, a dour reflection on the inevitable demise of one’s future. He then celebrates ordinariness on “Regular guy,” gleefully exclaiming “Put your hands in the air if you’re a regular guy!” His theses on love and life wrap up in the closer “In another life…,” where Lasky yearns for a love that transcends lifetimes, singing, “When you’re back as something new, any place, that’ll do, I’ll be coming back for you.” Life 1 is truly one of the most charming and imaginative projects of the year. Quadeca reminds us: be yourself, have a “Hell of a time,” fall in love, and you’ll surprise yourself with just how great life can be.
