Seafoam Walls is a genre-bending band from Miami, Florida with soothing vocals, unique guitar melodies, and light drum kits. I had the pleasure of seeing them open for Unknown Mortal Orchestra at the 9:30 Club here in D.C.. The band brings a new form of alternative indie to the scene by combining dream pop and jazz with Caribbean undertones. One of my favorite aspects of their music are the long, yet engaging instrumental breaks overlaid with a calming humming in “Sound Check.” In “AI,” the band encapsulates you in their world of reverbed vocals and guitar bridges, taking you through a rollercoaster of thoughts, emotions, and self-reflection. Not to mention, the creative cover art for their album, XVi , is a beautiful mosaic of pastel colors behind black and white skeletal facial features. Seafoam Walls also performed their most famous track—their version of the “Happy Birthday” hit song, called “You Can’t Have Your Cake and Ego Too (Happy Birthday).” It’s a fun and easy first listen, but upon the next you come to realize how our egos affect our interactions with those around us. Deep stuff. The live version of this song and many others were actually better than the studio versions, a refreshing surprise to hear. During the concert, they played an unreleased song with an incredibly catchy melody and an upbeat tempo that made me very excited about the direction of their music. I would undoubtedly recommend checking out their music and joining their journey as they grow into the mainstream. Arjun is a sophomore in the School of Health.
