Woohoo, Alice Phoebe Lou is coming to town! The South African artist is known for spinning folk songs touched with honey and melancholy. Her 2023 album Shelter became a DIY pop phenomenon, with tracks like “Open My Door” attracting 62 million listens on Spotify. For Oblivion, her sixth album, Alice Phoebe Lou returns to the intimate and introspective: spilling confessionals via acoustic guitar. “In this industry there’s an emphasis on needing to go bigger, to one-up yourself,” she explains. “But instead I returned to my roots of playing on the street. These songs come from deep inside my subconscious, dreams, the oblivion of sleep, the place where you can access your deepest thoughts.” The songs in Oblivion feel like they live somewhere between dreams and reality. In “Pretender”, Alice Phoebe Lou reflects on becoming more vulnerable with people as she grows older: “I’m stronger now that I’m softer too / I’m older now / But feel younger than when I / Pretended to know everything.” With influences like Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, Alice Phoebe Lou invites listeners to ponder deeply while enjoying a cup of hot tea.
