Indy Suggests: The Romanoffs Premiere

Television snobs rejoice! On Oct. 12, famed writer and showrunner Matthew Weiner returns to television (sort of). In his first series since Mad Men , Weiner takes his talents to Amazon with The Romanoffs . The eight-episode anthology tells eight separate stories about people who believe themselves to be descendants of the Russian royal family. While the plot remains vague beyond a simple synopsis, the series does have a modern-day setting, a departure from Weiner’s work with Mad Men , which was set in the 1950s and '60s. In addition to the shift in time period, the show also sparks excitement with its budget. Mad Men was notably filmed almost entirely indoors, unable to shoot exteriors due to the high costs associated with recreating a 1950s New York City. Armed with Je Bezos’ checkbook, The Romanoffs was filmed around the world on a budget of $50 million. Returning to the cast and crew are many fellow Mad Men alumni, including Christina Hendricks and John Slattery. The large cast also includes Aaron Eckhart, Isabelle Huppert, and Kathryn Hahn. This series marks the first time Amazon will release a show on a weekly basis; following in Hulu’s footsteps, the service will release the first two episodes of The Romanoffs on Oct. 12, with one episode releasing in each of the subsequent weeks.
