Review: Big Thief at The Anthem on Oct. 25

Big Thief performed at The Anthem Saturday, Oct. 25 as part of their Somersault Slide 360 Tour, which highlights their 2025 album Double Infinity. The band—which normally consists of Adrianne Lenker on vocals and guitar, Buck Meek on guitar, and James Krivchenia on drums—took on bassist Joshua Crumbly for their tour. The crew will hit more cities in North America through mid-November before resuming in Europe in April of next year.

The crowd, cheekily described by my friends as abound with oversized jeans and septum piercings, listened first to the musician Lomelda and her crew.

Lenker and her crew played five songs from Double Infinity, including the famous “Incomprehensible”. They also shined while playing four from their 2022 album Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You, including the titular track—one of my favorites. (“It's a little bit magic / Like a river of morning geese.”)

This tour comes after a big 2024 for Lenker, when she released and toured for the critically acclaimed album Bright Future and dropped a Palestine benefit EP I Won’t Let Go of Your Hand on Bandcamp.

During the show, Lenker admitted to the crowd she was in a bit of a funk that day, but she seemed to mostly get out of it, performing the last few songs with the oomph you would expect from such a big act like her. To be fair, the set was over two hours long—certainly not a bad thing. To me, that meant making up for lost time after I regrettably turned down an offer to see the band in 2022 during their Dragon tour.
